Father forgive them – what an amazing statement,
and not something I find particularly easy to say
– I like most people get angry and upset and somewhat annoyed when someone does something against me.
Revenge is usually the first thing on my mind
The Creed - Get them before they get you is something I lived by for many years – it’s certainly a lot easier to take revenge than forgive.
While if it was you or me we probably would have called down fire from heaven,
or asked God to open up the ground and swallow them up,
Here we have Jesus practicing what he preached – Forgiveness –
It’s so un-natural and yet so basic to the Christian Faith and how many times should we forgive someone 70 times 7 – that translates as an awful lot.
Yet forgiveness has power
– it turns the nameless so and so who wronged us into flesh and blood – a person a fellow struggler on this life journey,
– it releases us from being captive to the past that would stop us moving forward
– it allows us to enter fully into the life of the Kingdom of God
But sometimes the hardest person to forgive is ourselves.
