fossils and evolution

i am not a great one for getting inot arguments about evolution vs creation. My standard answer is - i don't know i wasn't there and neither were you...
So i very sheepishly turned up at a church on Saunday morning where they were looking at the whole issue. Needless to say although i don't think any of the argument makes a difference to my faith - from what was said i could not see much evidence for evolution from one species to another. makes you wonder whether some of the conspiracy theories about evolution are true after all....

When I was doing Geology A level, the teacher (a man with two doctorates... one in Geology and one in philosophy) said that Darwin had caused more wrong belief about the process of evolution than good... he said that the popular (recieved) wisdom showed a smooth curve to evolution whereas the real fossil record showed stpped evolution... periods of stability followed by leaps in development (exactly the way a childs learning develops) his example was the trilobite... we find no evidence of darwinian evolution... there was no trilobite with a single hard cased exoskeleton... the one with a two piece etc... all we find is nothing (soft bodied animals) then the trilobite as we know it with its hugely complex exoskeleton. Personally I'm a comprmiser... I am happy to accept current evolutionary theory as it stands and the biblical narrative as just that a narraytive of the process of creation not a detailed scientific chronology... this makes sense to me when you remember who the stories were for/told to... a primitive culture.

The more i think about it the more i want to still say i don't know - i agree the creation story is not a scientifc record - but a story and one that i think describes very well human potential and human failing - but more importantly for me it puts God right in the centre of the whole thing. I guess that is all i am prepaired to hold to
